Why Are There More Autism Diagnoses?

By | Blog | No Comments

Autism diagnosisA question heard often is why is the ASD diagnosis increasing? Some think it is over diagnosed. While misdiagnosis can occur, the main reason for the increase is due to better awareness and knowledge behind the diagnosis. Now that ASD includes PDD-NOS (Persuasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified) and Asperger’s disorder, it is clear the diagnosis reaches a variety of individuals who may have slipped through the cracks before.

Our schools, medical professionals, and other professionals throughout the community have more information than ever to help spot what can be very subtle symptoms. They are better equipped to see where the behavior problems or social difficulties actually stem from.

This raised awareness and increase of diagnoses, has provided many families with the opportunity to take early intervention measures. Research has shown that early intervention for children with autism and other developmental disorders, can have a significantly positive impact on their overall development.

If you have concerns about your child’s behavior or feel like ASD might explain some of your own challenges, you can talk to your primary care physician or seek out local mental health services.
