Autism: The Umbrella Diagnosis
April is Autism Awareness Month, and as we continue to grow in our awareness this month it’s important to understand what autism is, why it’s a growing diagnosis, how to support each other, and the stigma that still lingers.
What is Autism?
Autism is characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) made revisions to the diagnosis to incorporate aspergers syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder NOS. The diagnosis itself does not necessarily paint a clear image of the individual and their strengths and challenges. Autism is different to each individual just as we are all different and unique from one and other.
